Seamless Gutters in Tampa: What the Price Per Foot Buys

Seamless aluminum gutters in Tampa Bay run $10 to $17 per linear foot installed. That is a wide range for what sounds like one product, and it is the reason three quotes on the same block ranch in Brandon can come back at $1,500, $2,000 and $2,500. They are not the same gutters. Here is what each dollar is buying.

Gauge: .027 or .032

The aluminum comes off the coil in two common thicknesses. Most crews stock .027 because it is cheaper and forms faster. We run .032, which is about 20% thicker, holds its shape when a ladder leans on it, and does not oil-can in the afternoon sun. On a 150-foot house the material difference is around $100–$150. It is the first thing to ask about and the first thing a cheap quote leaves out.

Hangers: spikes or hidden

A spike-and-ferrule hanger is a seven-inch nail driven through the gutter into the fascia. It is fast, it is what most 1990s gutters in Carrollwood and Town 'n' Country were hung with, and it backs out over the years until the run sags. A hidden hanger is a bracket that clips inside the gutter and screws into the fascia. It costs about $2 more per hanger, and at one every 24 inches on 150 feet that is 75 hangers, so around $150 on the job. Spacing matters as much as type: 24 inches is standard, 18 on long runs and anywhere wind loads matter, which around here is everywhere.

Fasteners: plain steel or stainless

This is the Tampa line item. Zinc-plated steel screws cost a few cents; stainless cost several times that. Within a couple of miles of the bay or the Gulf, plain steel rusts through in ten to fifteen years while the aluminum is still fine, and the gutter comes down in a storm. Stainless adds $75–$150 on a typical house. A quote that does not mention fastener metal on a waterfront house is planning to use the cheap ones.

Downspouts: 2x3 or 3x4

A 2x3 downspout is what the price-per-foot advertisements assume. A 3x4 carries roughly double the water and costs about $40 more per drop. On a house with four or five downspouts that is $160–$200. In a Gulf storm dropping an inch and a half an hour, it is the difference between a gutter that works and one that overflows at the far end of every run. The count matters too: one downspout per 35 feet of run, minimum, and a quote that gives a 50-foot back wall one drop is under-built.

Corners and miters

Every inside or outside corner is a hand-cut miter sealed on site. A simple rectangular roof has four; a hip roof with bump-outs in Wesley Chapel can have twelve. Crews price corners either per corner ($25–$60 each) or by rolling them into the per-foot rate. Either is fine, as long as you know which. A per-foot quote that does not mention corners on a complicated roof is going to add them on the invoice.

Fascia and drip edge

The board behind the gutter has to be sound. Any crew that quotes from the driveway has not checked it, and will either hang on rot or hand you a surprise on install day. Fascia replacement is $8–$20 per foot and should be a separate line with a footage on it, not a vague allowance. Same with drip edge: on block homes that never had gutters, the roof edge often has none, and a strip of it is a small cost that keeps water off the new fascia.

Haul-away and permit

Tear-off and disposal of the old system should be in the price. A permit, where the local building department requires one, is a line with a fee on it. Where a permit is required, Florida requires the contractor to hold a state specialty or general contractor license; a quote from someone who cannot pull one has a cost hidden in it.

The same house, three quotes

A 150-foot single-story block ranch in Brandon, four downspouts, six corners, one soft corner of fascia, two miles from the bay:

Quote A is the gutters the house is replacing, installed again. Quote B is a sound job that will sag near the water in fifteen years. Quote C is what we would write for that address. All three are "seamless aluminum gutters," and all three are honest at their price. The question is whether you know what you are buying.

How to compare

Ask each bidder for gauge, hanger type and spacing, fastener metal, downspout size and count, the corner count, fascia footage and per-foot price, extensions, haul-away and permit. Put them side by side. The quote that is $600 under the others is nearly always missing two of those lines.
